During the 1970’s and 80’s, Jorge Videla’s cruel dictatorship kidnapped, tortured, and murdered thousands of Argentinian citizens. Many families faced the horror and shock of the disappearance of family members who were abruptly taken by the military, never to be heard from again.
Such was the case for Nora Cortinas, affectionately referred to as “Norita”. When her son, Gustavo, was suddenly kidnapped by the military junta, she embarked on a life-changing journey to find him, and along the way found community, purpose, and hope. Starting as a small group of housewives demonstrating on Buenos Aires’ Plaza de Mayo, Norita’s movement saw the end of the Videla dictatorship and the imprisonment of its leaders.
In capturing Norita’s storied life, filmmakers Jayson McNamara and Andrea Tortonese embrace the complexities of her story, including the very real challenges that Noritas activism created for her family, such as her estrangement from her youngest son. But rather than retire from the fight against injustice, Norita continues to inspire a generation of Argentinians seeking new freedoms.
