Director Biography - Zeyneb Khechmoune

Zeyneb Khechmoune is filmmaker based in w, screenwriter, producer, and media educator whose work explores identity, belonging, social issues, and the power of storytelling to shape how we see ourselves and others.

She is currently pursuing an MFA in Film & Media Arts at American University in Washington, D.C., where her creative work spans narrative filmmaking, screenwriting, photography, and media research. She has written, directed, and produced several short films, including The Ride and Watermelon, alongside other narrative and visual projects that explore human experiences through intimate, symbolic, and socially conscious storytelling. Her short film The Ride, a reflective story about loneliness, mental health, and human connection, was nominated at American University’s Visions Awards and has received recognition on the festival circuit, including official selections at the Hollywood International Indie Film & Screenplay Awards, Alexandria Film Festival, and Columbia Maryland Film Festival.

Her filmmaking is deeply influenced by her multicultural background and her interest in stories that challenge stereotypes and bring underrepresented perspectives to the screen. Her projects range from intimate human dramas to socially and politically conscious narratives examining immigration, Muslim and Arab representation, colonialism, family, faith, and belonging.

Beyond filmmaking, Zeyneb is the founder and CEO of Muslim Leadership Media (MLM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering emerging Muslim storytellers, advancing media literacy, and supporting the creation of meaningful media rooted in authentic representation and strong values.

As a filmmaker and educator, she is particularly interested in the relationship between storytelling, culture, and influence—both in understanding how media shapes audiences and in helping the next generation become more conscious viewers and purposeful creators.
