The Ogre, a 2025 rockumentary by Portland-based Barnegat Studios and directed by Justin Boswick, offers an all-access, observational look behind the scenes of the local Portland music scene, following the three-member band Ogre, composed of Ace Jennings, Grace Crane, and Nils Niswonger, as they prepare and play their biggest show yet at Mission Theater in 2024. The film offers a look behind the scenes of the local Portland music scene, including candid interviews with fans and local bands Machine Country, Unspeakable Carnage, and Kill Michael. While the film delves into the complex relationship dynamics between the members and Ace’s friend, Rusty, who is a mysterious and frustrating addition to the band, it’s ultimately about the profound brotherhood within Ogre and how the band offers purpose to their lives as working-class artists. Combining elements of documentary and Lynchian horror, The Ogre offers a unique look at friendship, creativity, and the peculiar dynamics that arise when personal relationships intersect with artistic ambition.
