Born with intellectual limitations, 26-year-old Margarita has always felt like an outsider, struggling to find her place in a world that often misunderstands her. Under the devoted care of her mother, Sandy, Margarita's life takes a turn when Sandy is diagnosed with cancer for a third time. Amidst the uncertainty and emotional upheaval, Margarita stumbles upon the world of hobbyhorsing, a unique sport where participants mimic equestrian riding with stick horses.
Margarita yearns to prove her independence and acceptance to her mother, believing that winning a hobby-horse competition would be the ultimate testament. However, Sandy, in her protective role, encourages Margarita to apply for a job at a Halloween store that has recently opened in town. Margarita secures the job, but unbeknownst to Sandy, she manipulates her work hours to make time for hobbyhorse practice.
At the same time, Sandy struggles with battling a fight much larger than her illness. She must figure out how to cope with the reality of one day leaving her daughter behind to fend for herself in an, at times, unfeeling and cold world.
Ultimately, Margarita understands that acceptance and fulfillment come from embracing her true self, and Sandy learns to let go, trusting that her daughter will thrive on her own terms, even when she is gone. Despite her initial hesitation, Sandy supports Margarita's dream, recognizing the joy it brings her, and encourages her to compete in the competition.
