For people living with psoriasis, being seen can mean more than having someone notice what is happening to their skin. It can mean being heard, believed, correctly diagnosed, and understood as a whole person.

Being Seen: A Psoriasis Story follows two Black patients, Terrence Tyler and Margaret Davis, whose experiences reveal the profound consequences of being overlooked- and the transformative power of finally being seen.

In Washington, D.C., Terrence Tyler recounts decades of living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Misdiagnosed with eczema as a child, Terrence spent years misunderstanding his condition, hiding his skin, and struggling with the physical and emotional toll of his disease. At the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, a community dermatology clinic brings specialized care directly into Ward 7, creating a space where patients can access care without leaving their community. With the support of dermatologist Dr. Adam Friedman and the Curry family, Terrence finds not only effective treatment, but a healthcare team that feels like family.

In Birmingham, Alabama, Margaret Davis shares a similar story of being unseen. Her psoriasis began when she was five years old, but for more than five decades she was repeatedly told she had eczema. She endured painful symptoms, hair loss, joint pain, embarrassment, and a lifetime of hiding her skin. It is not until she meets Dr. Tiffany Mayo that someone finally recognizes what she has been living with. After receiving the correct diagnosis and treatment, Margaret describes the experience as getting her life back.

Their stories are interwoven with perspectives from physicians, community leaders, and medical experts examining why psoriasis can be difficult to recognize and diagnose- particularly in people with darker skin tones. The film explores the importance of representation in medical education and imagery, the consequences of delayed and inadequate care, and the need to listen more closely to patients when they tell us something is wrong.

At its heart, Being Seen is a story about visibility, trust, and the human connection at the center of healthcare. Through Terrence and Margaret, the film asks what becomes possible when patients are no longer overlooked- and when the people caring for them take the time to truly see them.
