Birthgap (2025) is an updated edition of the acclaimed feature-length documentary, incorporating the latest data and research findings. It follows data scientist and demographer Stephen J. Shaw on a nine-year journey across 24 countries to answer one of the defining questions of our time: Why are birth rates falling in nearly every society on Earth?

While most researchers study individual countries, Shaw searched for patterns that transcend culture, religion, wealth, and politics. What he uncovered challenges the way fertility has been understood for decades. The conventional measure, based on the "average woman," obscures what is really happening beneath the surface. His findings offer a striking new perspective on modern life, education, careers, relationships, and the timing of parenthood. The research was later peer-reviewed and published in a Nature Portfolio journal in 2025, prompting renewed discussion about how fertility is measured.

As the evidence unfolds, the film takes viewers on an investigative journey spanning six continents.
