A private investigator (Boy in the Water, aka Clay Lorant) is in their office. It becomes apparent that they are working late in order to avoid sleeping, as they are having recurring nightmares. They turn on the radio, listening to music until it lulls them to sleep. In what appears to be a dream sequence, the private investigator is dressed in a tuxedo and singing “Sneakerwave” on stage. This simplistic performance is intercut throughout the rest of the music video as it shows a part of the P.I.'s psyche where they can be soft, romantic, and emotional. Soon, the mood changes, and the audience is unsure if they are still witnessing the P.I.’s dreams or memories. The detective is investigating a murder scene, standing by a body chalk outline while taking notes as the fog rolls in. Unexpectedly, a Femme Fatale appears in the mist, claiming she is the fiancé of the deceased. The P.I. notices she is missing a diamond earring and sees the lost item clutched in the hand of the dead man on the ground. The Femme Fatale asks for it back, and the P.I. says no, using a handkerchief to pocket the jewelry. Later, she comes to the P.I.’s office in an attempt to retrieve the earring but lies and insists she needs help. She cries until the P.I. offers to fix her a drink. As soon as their back is turned, she points her gun at them, shoots, and misses. The P.I. pulls out their pistol and kills her in self-defense. Suddenly, the detective awakes at their desk, disheveled. They turn off the radio as the song comes to an end. The audience is now privy to the very first time that the private investigator encountered a Femme Fatale. There is a learning curve when it comes to betrayal, grief, and disappointment. Maybe they’ll know better next time. Maybe not.
