When an estranged father and daughter meet again as death row convict and lawyer, the two must reconcile their past and relationship in the remaining 24 hours before the verdict.

Yeo Jin, a successful lawyer, is met with Jong Su, her dad and the death row convict of the case, 15 years since he'd left. At each biting turn of conversation, she resists those memories which threaten to break her shell.

The essence of their past is held within this golden room of their childhood home in which they sang “In Summer." More than emotions, sound penetrates and melts the human heart.

As the conflict between a daughter who’s pursuing the facts of what happened the day her father murdered his racist manager and a witty father who’s hiding his brokenness unfolds, we see behind the veil of their estrangement which shrouds what really matters–two humans who want to connect.

We don’t see two people who finally learn to forgive, nor understand, but accept the other person in that moment. In an ambiguous ending where we do not know what happens to the case, we see Yeo Jin break free of those confines and lose herself to the song.

Director Biography - Grace Kim

Grace Kim is a LA, NY based writer and filmmaker. In Summer is her third short film, while she has also written a novella, The Korean Irvine Taxi Company, about a family friend and owner of this taxi service—“an antique shop of life” as she likes to describe him. She was inspired to write In Summer—a 480 thesis film shortlist—because of a car ride with her dad where she heard him sing along to this 90s K-RnB song, In Summer by Deux. As a writer, she wants to relay the beauty and pain of living through the screen and on the page, while being a bridge between Hollywood and global stories as a Korean American creative. When she’s not working on passion projects, she’s a part-time cat mom and bread connoisseur.
