Our final film block of the festival focuses on hope, and on action. You will see the world through the eyes of a budding young entomologist, passionate conservationists, and ordinary people who become change makers as a form of resilience. This block ends with a "grand" adventure that takes us on a 1,000 mile journey driven by the love of one animal, ending right here in Astoria, where the river meets the sea.

Thanks to our event sponsors Salty Raven, Columbia River Maritime Museum, International League of Conservation Photographers, Pro Photo Supply, Astoria Co-Op, Cannon Beach Book Company, and Tuff Puffin for helping us to bring these incredible films to Astoria!

In 2004, Hurricane Ivan devastated Dr. Salem Saloom’s tree farm just outside Evergreen, Alabama. Faced with what to do next, Salem turned to the Farm Bill. He used resources from the bill to replace his downed tree stands with longleaf pine, a native tree species that is more resilient to wind from hurricanes. This kicked off a years-long restoration effort on his farm which to this day is central to his family, his business and his faith.
